Mobile Money Reconciliation & Shortage Control Glossary

A practical vocabulary for explaining the failure patterns we repeatedly encountered in cash-heavy mobile-money and agent operations.

About these termsSome definitions below are standard accounting/control ideas expressed in plain language. Terms marked “Digital Echoes working term” are labels we use to make recurring shortage patterns easier to recognize; they are not presented as regulator-defined terminology.
Shortage Location Test Digital Echoes working term
Identify which value bucket is wrong before investigating cause: physical cash, provider/platform value, provider receivable, customer receivable, staff liability, fee classification, reversal, or FX movement.
False Balance Digital Echoes working term
A close that appears correct because the wrong value was recognized, two errors offset each other, or a receivable/fee was treated as cash or float.
Cross-Service Masking Digital Echoes working term
When one service's surplus or correct position hides another service's shortage because the owner reviews only a combined total.
Float Injection Masking Digital Echoes working term
When new owner/manager cash or float makes the final balance look healthy without resolving a variance that existed before the injection.
Shortage Trail Digital Echoes working term
The reconstructable sequence from opening balances through transactions, exceptions, expected close, actual close, variance, evidence and resolution.
Evidence Gap Digital Echoes working term
A transaction entry exists but a required reference, receipt or other supporting evidence is missing.
Settlement Timing Gap
A difference caused because the business funded a payout before a provider or partner value actually settled.
Provider Receivable Bridge Digital Echoes working term
The control treatment that holds unsettled provider value as a receivable between the initial payout and the later settlement receipt.
Reversal Integrity
The principle that corrections preserve the original transaction and create a linked, explainable reversal rather than erasing the trail.
Fee Asset Illusion Digital Echoes working term
When fee income is counted as an extra asset in addition to the cash or platform balance where the fee already physically sits.
Dual-Currency Direction Error
An FX entry where the business receive/give direction is reversed or one currency side is omitted, creating opposing USD/LRD variances.
Close-Day Evidence Rule Digital Echoes working term
A shift is not considered fully controlled merely because the grand total nets to zero; material bucket variances and high-risk evidence gaps must still be explained or documented.
Platform Credit Separation Digital Echoes working term
The rule that a provider, bank or Xpress statement credit is recorded as an increase to the actual platform asset and is not automatically classified as sales, customer receivable collection or provider settlement.
Float Source Test Digital Echoes working term
Ask whether added float came from outside the business or was transferred from existing physical cash. External top-up changes total controlled assets; an internal cash-to-float transfer only changes asset location.
Non-Posting Control Flag Digital Echoes working term
An investigation marker, such as a shortage flag, that documents a problem without changing expected cash, float or receivables. A later confirmed correction or write-off is recorded separately.
Remittance Timing Path Digital Echoes working term
The distinction between customer send, payout with immediate platform credit, payout before provider settlement, and the later provider settlement receipt. Each path changes different value buckets.
